Have you ever been caught with your pants down?
Awww nooooo! Erm, are we talking mid-love type thing? I've been caught
with my pants down loads of times, but not during a
pash sesh. It's usually when photographers catch me backstage at concerts
and stuff. The worst time was when I was doing a
roadshow. I was on the way to the loo - y'know, those portaloos - opposite
the gate where all the girls were. I walked past,
waved to them and went in. Suddenly a photographer opened the door
and took a picture. I was sat with my pants down and
hundreds of girls could see me!
Describe your dream date scenario
Well, I'd be with a girl who I could have great fun with. She wouldn't
have to be just good-looking, but a good laugh and mad
for it, too. We'd jet off to the Caribbean and eat some coconut together.
We'd lay in the sun and have a beautiful time.
How important are looks when it comes to having a successful pop
career?
I'm aimed at a certain market where looks are important, so it has
to be taken into consideration, but hopefully people will
come to respect me for my music. That's why I never do any pictures
with my top off. When I first started out people would
say, 'Just unbutton your top', and I'd say, 'No, I'm not flippin' page
three - I'm here to sell records!'
When was the last time you travelled on public transport?
Ooh. Erm, does a plane count? No? Oh, well I haven't been on a bus
for about two or three years. I liked the school bus,
y'know, sitting on the back seat and causing trouble. I go on the train
from London to Manchester quite a lot, I'd rather do that
than fly up there. I don't like flying.
Are you still mistaken for a girl on a regular basis?
Before I recorded my first single, my hair was long. Until I was about
14, I was mistaken for a girl all the time. I don't know
why. It might be because I've these long eyelashes that I used to try
and cut off. Now I have a bit of stubble and it's not
happening as much. But recently I was on a plane and the hostess came
over and said, 'Would you like a drink, madam?' I put
on my gruffest voice and replied, 'No thank you!'
What was your favourite game as a child?
Hungry Hippos - that was great. I had hours of fun with it. I was never
into Connect 4 or stuff like that - it was too
mathematical for me. I never liked computer games either.
Were you a scrapper or a softy at school?
I wasn't really a scrapper, in fact I never had a fight at school.
I was quite mouthy though and knew how to stick up for myself.
The girls used to quite like me because I made them laugh, but some
of the lads didn't like the attention they gave me so they'd
hassle me about it. Luckily I was never bullied.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be what I am now. I never really wanted to be famous, but
I was really into Prince, Madonna and even Elvis when
I was growing up! I just loved music and wanted to be industry and
make records. When I went to my careers officer, Mr
Parker, he said being a pop star wasn't a practical career whatsoever!
Would you sleep with someone to further your career?
Erm, no. But that's easy for me to say now that I am where I am. But
maybe if I was in a position where I was desperate then,
yeah, of course I would. If someone said, 'Sleep with me and you'll
have a No 1 single,' then I'd turn them down flat. I wouldn't
have made it on my own merit and, besides, I'd have to keep doing it
every time I wanted another hit!
Do you have a healthy lifestyle or a rock star lifestyle?
It depends really. Because I've been travelling about so much recently,
it's been a bit mad. I've been burning the candle at both
ends. Now I've had my first hot though, I've started looking after
myself because I've learnt from my experiences. You can't go
mad all night and then do a full day's work the next day. I'm more
determined and more strict with myself now. It's tempting to
stay up late when there's a load of you in a hotel and stuff, because
people think you're boring if you don't.
Who's the best famous person you've met?
I'd probably say Lulu. I know Lulu really well, because my manager
was managing her during the Take That Relight My Fire
days. She's like someone from Absolutely Fabulous. But she's a deep
person and I can ask her for advice about all sorts,
because she's been in this business and she understands. I love my
mum, but Lulu is like my pop mum.
Were you ever sent out of class for being naughty?
All the time! I went to a Catholic school and we did religion classes
a lot. Me and this girl sat at a desk right at the front of a
class so we were facing a wall. Anyway, we'd be bored and chip away
at the wall until eventually there was a massive hole in
it! The teacher would send us out when we did it! I suppose we were
tring to dig our way out!
Have you ever had your heart broken?
One person inparticular broke my heart. I was seeing her through school
on and off for a couple of years. I really did love her.
When I left school, I went away for the summer and I used to call her
every day, but when she went to college and I started my
career, she dropped me and didn't want to know. Recently, I saw her
in a club and she was all over me. I mean, just because
I'm famous now!
When was the first time you got up to ruderies?
I think I had a fumble, a bit of a slap and tickle when I was about...
oh, I don't know. I was erm, quite young. I remember
playing doctors and nurses with this girl when I was about six. I don't
remember much, just that I liked it.
What was the most embarassing your mum ever made you wear?
A suit for my first Holy Communion - I was about nine. All the lads
wore suits and ties, but my mum said, 'I'm having something
made specially!' She took me to see a woman who lived around the corner
and made clothes - she made me a horrid white
suit! I looked like Barry Manilow. It was flared with a kipper tie
ang big collars.
Describe your first proper snog.
I was in the school library with a girl called Claire. There was me
and two other lads, and we were making puppets. I said,
'Shall we have a snog?' and she said, 'Yes,' and stood there with her
mouth open while we all walked over and snogged her. I
don't think we had the hang of it though - our mouths were too rigid!
How in control of your career are you?
I'm very lucky, I suppose. Because I write my own songs and have my
own input, people trust me as far as the music goes.
With image, I always decide on what I want to wear. My manager's great,
he leaves me to do my own thing most of the time.
I've grown up so much in the last six months as far as that sort of
thing is concerned.
Do you like a bit of outside passion or are you an indoors man?
Erm, indoors. I'd rather have a snog inside where it's nice and warm
on the settee watching Coronation Street. I'm an old
romantic aren't I?
Which Spice Girl would you like to get up to ruderies with?
Actually, I'll tell you a secret. Because we're on the same label,
I sent them a note to say 'hello' and a PS saying, 'Will you all go
out with me?' just as a joke. They replied saying, 'Emma fancies you,'
then she'd put, 'No I don't, but Mel C does.' I'd go out
with them all, I reckon. But at the moment, I'm going through a Sporty
Spice phase. It changes from week to week. I had a
thing about Mel B at one time, and Geri. What did she write in the
letter? Erm, I can't reveal that I'm afraid!
